Shepherd
Nature & EnvironmentShepherds wander through the countryside with their flock of sheep in the winter months or graze the flock on the alpine pastures in the summer months. Up to a flock size of 400 grazing lambs, a shepherd or shepherdess travels with a maximum of two dogs. They are responsible for the herd and are bound by various existing regulations (including keeping a logbook). Prior to the start of the herding tour, a licence must be requested from the cantonal veterinary offices for each canton to be crossed, together with an area allocation. The professionals master the herding technique, look after the herding dog and treat the animals in the event of injuries, infections, worm diseases, parasite infestation or hoof rot. If there are signs of illness, the vet must be consulted.
