Musicologists analyse all aspects of music as well as the cultural and cultural-historical contexts of musical works and movements. They describe and compare musical sources from all eras. Sub-areas of musicological research include instrumentology, notation (analysing sheet music and musical texts), performance practice and the theory of composition and form (counterpoint and harmony). They carry out the following activities:
