Microbiologist
Chemistry & PharmaMicrobiology is a branch of biology with links to chemistry. Microbiologists study microorganisms, i.e. tiny organisms such as bacteria, algae, fungi and viruses. In the laboratory, sometimes under high safety conditions, they investigate their structure, reproduction and genetics as well as their beneficial or pathogenic effects on plants, animals and humans. They also search for their usability in biotechnological processes. Microbiologists work in research and teaching at universities or scientific institutes, in the chemical-pharmaceutical industry and in companies in the food sector. There are also jobs in public administration, e.g. in agricultural and forestry research institutes, or in ecological research centres.
