A cantonal office for culture is responsible on the one hand for the preservation and communication of cultural heritage, and on the other for the promotion and further development of cultural programmes. Heads of office ensure the strategic implementation and further development of cantonal cultural policy and conceptualise and manage related projects. They lead or are part of the management bodies of intercantonal cultural institutions or commissions. They contribute their expertise and take on organisational and other implementation tasks. They also provide innovative services in favour of the various interest groups and the population and maintain a useful network of contacts. Another of their tasks is to ensure that contemporary mediation programmes are in place.
