Most consular specialists from the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) work in consulates general or embassies and liaise with Swiss nationals living abroad. They assume the function of a residents' registration office and provide Swiss travellers in the host country with the necessary consular protection, for example in the event of accidents or imprisonment.
