Gemologist

Creative & Design

Gemologists are experts in diamonds and coloured stones such as rubies, sapphires and emeralds. As experts, they assess the quality of these gemstones. They check them for authenticity, purity, colour, weight and cut. For their analyses, they use instruments such as microscopes, polariscopes, conoscopes, refractometers, spectroscopes, reflectometers and thermotesters. They also use chemical-physical methods. Gemologists are mainly active in the two areas of coloured stone identification and diamond grading. In colour stone identification, they differentiate between natural and treated gemstones and synthetic stones and imitations. In the laboratory, they determine characteristics such as light refraction, density and multi-colour. They are familiar with the locations where these stones are found and the market situation for them.
