Specialists in child and adolescent psychiatry and psychotherapy deal with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental disorders and illnesses in children and adolescents. The main tasks include discussions with parents and other carers such as teachers and GPs, clarification using tests and other examination methods, e.g. observation during play, as well as therapeutic intervention. In the case of certain mental disorders, physical examinations, e.g. weight checks, motor or neurological examinations such as electroencephalography, and drug treatment must be carried out.Specialists in child and adolescent psychiatry and psychotherapy often work together with institutions for children and adolescents.
