University Lecturer

All professions in university teaching and research are summarised under this collective term, with the exception of university assistants (described separately). Private lecturers - at least in German-speaking Switzerland - have a habilitation in addition to their dissertation. They are obliged to teach courses (although the university is not obliged to pay them) and usually combine this activity with a position at the university, e.g. as a senior assistant, or a professional activity outside the university, e.g. as a lawyer. After several years of service, private lecturers can be appointed as titular professors. In general, it should be noted that the system of teaching at universities is in a constant state of flux and varies from canton to canton.
